AALTO University - School of Art and Design
Established in 2010, Aalto University is a new university with centuries of experience. Aalto University was created from the merger of three Finnish universities: The Helsinki School of Economics, the Helsinki University of Technology and The Helsinki University of Art and Design. Aalto University School of Science and Technology has been divided into four new schools starting from 1st of January 2011. The six schools of Aalto University are all leading and renowned institutions in their respective fields and in their own right. The combination of six schools opens up new possibilities for strong multi-disciplinary education and research. The new university's ambitious goal is to be one of the leading institutions in the world in terms of research and education in its own specialized disciplines. An attractive environment for learning and research. Aalto University is strongly future-oriented while, at the same time, building on the combined 300-year-history of three highly regarded universities. Only the best students and researchers are admitted to study and conduct research at the Aalto University. A student-centered culture that encourages people to passionately learn new things will be fostered at Aalto University. The new university will provide high-quality research and education and create an internationally attractive environment for learning and research. Aalto University will focus its research on major global issues. New research environments often evolve into larger research programs or units through themes that require a cross-disciplinary approach.

M.A. in Product Design (Ceramic/Glass)
Prof. Hubert Kittel Tel. 0049 - 345 - 7751 820 e-mail: kittel@burg-halle.de Within the module structure of the faculty of design more than 7 degree courses are offered (10 semesters, "Diplom" [which is the equivalent of a master degree]), among them such rare and unique ones like: toy design or ceramic- and glassdesign. This department of ceramic- and glassdesign has a long tradition - beginning in the later twenties of last century. It integrates intensive studio- and workshop-centred design projects. The classic materials, first of all porcelain, then ceramics and glass keep their traditional place at the centre of the department. The course may lead to careers with following orientations: the product designer for the industry and in the field of craft design or the studio designer / craftsman. The department has developed an excellent international framework for exchange activities. Important links are established to leading German companies and manufactories.

Burg Giebichenstein - the University of Art and Design Halle

Burg Giebichenstein - the University of Art and Design Halle - has received its name from the old castle where the original campus was first located. Founded 1915 as a school of arts and crafts dedicated to "Werkstatt"-principle the profile was formed by the legacy of the "Deutscher Werkbund". During the twenties of the last century there has been a strong competition between the Bauhaus at Weimar/Dessau and the more craft-centred Burg Giebichenstein - studios. Consequently, the hallmarks of the school have been: craft tradition, individual artistic work, industrial and small scale production, as well as architecture related art and design.

Since 1958 the school has been recognised as an institution of higher education. Halle developed into a leading centre of industrial design education and related research activities in East Germany - in the same way the applied art courses gained international reputation. After the German reunification the university carefully extended its profile and fields. The region of the "twin cities" Halle and Leipzig, located in the center of Germany, is exemplary for the transition of an area from old to new economy. Formerly a stronghold of traditional industries, the region has now developed into a high-tech area with a large number of higher education-, research- and innovation-centres. Furthermore, Halle and Leipzig are and have always been important cultural centres, where for example G. F. Händel and J. S. Bach have lived and worked.

Today Burg Giebichenstein educates and pursues research in the fields of design, new media, fine and applied arts as well as art education and design theory. Both faculties: design and art - are offering more than 20 classes. The degree programs take 5 or 6 years to complete and lead to diplomas in art or design. Traditionally, the university has well - equipped workshops for all courses and subjects and an excellent centre of media technology. Due to a very good student - teacher - ratio (about 900 students and 65 full-time-teachers) our students receive a lot of individual attention.

Central Saint Martins
Central Saint Martins is probably the most famous of all seven London based art and design colleges owned by the London Institute. In the last years, both the range and reputation of the course have been expanded and strong links have been forged not only with industry, consultants and sponsors, but also internally in order to create a new dialogue between the fashion and product departments and broaden the range of consumer products currently being designed by product design students. With students from over 35 different nationalities attending the Product Course it was opportune to better utilize the fertile "melting pot" at Central Saint Martins and translate this into design products for the international consumer. The end of the year show featured students using smart materials and technologies to create new design for new identities, for all parts of the body. Such designs included everything from safety sports wear to high visibility scooter jackets, from portable communication devices affixed to clothing and electronic city guides designed as head gear. The course intends to inspire young product designers to design tomorrow's ideas not only in a more fashionable and sensuous way, but ready to wear to the office as well as on the street.

Istituto Europeo di Design
The Istituto Europeo de Design has always followed the education of designers in Italy, Spain and Brasil from 1966. In 1994 the opening of the Madrid location marked the beginning of an expansion process outside Italy of IED combined with an infinite dialogue with a city which immediately and enthusiastically welcomed the school. This Institute continued its growth at international level and soon became one of the most important design centers. After twelve years IED of Madrid continues its growth by including the historical general headquarters of Calle Larra 14 together with the new location of Altamira Palace in Gran Via, in the center of Madrid. The architectural tradition of Ventura Rodriguez is combined with modern trends of innovative designs. According to a very basic principle: quality, avant-garde education, a direct relationship with the business world and a humanistic background where culture is perceived as an identity symbol. According to these principles, a good designer should be able to fulfill the needs of a changing dynamic environment, both on a creative and technical standpoint.

Fachhochschule Munster
The Fachhochschule Muenster is one of the biggest University of Applied Sciences in Germany (currently it ranks second as far as research and development activities are concerned). Originally the department of design was a former "kunstgewerbe-schule", an academy of fine arts. The integrative course of studies in Design offers a wide range of training in form and structure in a comprehensive study course with the following fields of work: Exhibition and Presentation Design/Moving Picture Media/Corporate Identity/Print Graphics/Photography Illustration/Information Design/ Interactive Media-Interface/Communication Design/Product Design. The courses consist of 8 semesters: three semesters of basic course, five semesters of main studies. During main study, project groups work on concrete formulations from fields of work taken from whole process of design (project planning, investigation, design, documentation, presentation). At the end of the 8 semesters, in order to obtain their diploma-degree, students must demonstrate, by means of an independent piece of work, their competence in design and planning when implementing a design project.
